The Beauty of What We Leave Behind
There is a tendency to think that value lies only in the new.
A newly quarried material, or a pristine surface - a perfect object untouched by time.
Yet much of what inspires us at FOUND comes from just the opposite: weathered stone, worn timbers, scarred rocks - the subtle marks left by years of use or neglect.
These are the things that often hold our attention longest.
In the studio the same principle applies. The materials we choose to work with are not always selected for their perfection. We are often drawn to those that have been overlooked, forgotten or discarded; materials that still have something to offer, if only we are willing to look more closely.
This belief sits at the heart of FOUND.
Not simply because it is environmentally responsible, although that matters greatly to us, but because it reflects a broader philosophy about value and making. We believe useful things deserve long lives and that beautiful objects become more beautiful through use.
Throughout our collections, reclaimed and overlooked materials are incorporated wherever possible. Mineral by-products, surplus materials and other resources that might otherwise be discarded can contribute subtle variation, depth and character to finished pieces. The decorative vases featured in the image above were commissioned for an interior design project to help add character and texture and depth to a relatively new building. For these we chose locally sourced rocks and minerals to finish the stoneware pieces.
The result is that no two objects we make are ever entirely identical.
We allow glazes to settle differently, and surfaces to reveal unexpected movement, for example.
Rather than seeking absolute uniformity, we welcome these variations as evidence of the creative and making process itself. They remind us that handmade objects remain connected to the materials from which they are made. This approach also reflects something increasingly absent from modern manufacturing: individuality.
Many of the objects we encounter each day are designed to be replicated endlessly. Their value lies in consistency but their flaw is that they are identically owned by many others.
The objects we create at FOUND are guided by a different idea.
That uniqueness is not a flaw.
That variation can be beautiful.
That the slight differences between one bowl and the next are precisely what make them worth keeping.
In a culture often focused on replacement, we find ourselves more interested in permanence because the bowl becomes part of a morning ritual, the serving dish appears at family gatherings for decades to come and the vase moves with you from one home to another.
These are the objects that quietly collect stories.
They become part of daily life not because they are perfect, but because they are present.
Perhaps this is why we are so drawn to materials with a previous life - they remind us that value is rarely fixed.
Sometimes the most meaningful things are simply waiting to be found…
FOUND creates porcelain and stoneware objects for the home and hospitality, shaped by craftsmanship, material exploration and responsible making.
